As well as car accidents, I've seen birds today on the New River.

This is a Cormorant, but according to the book it shouldn't have the white bit in winter. That's global warming for you etc.

This is a Kingfisher which was exciting, I'd never seen one before. It's a brilliant bird, the bright blue streak as it flies low over the water is like something you'd expect to see somewhere tropical. I'm not sure if there are any fish in the New River - I hope it found some, and hangs around.

Kingfishers are great. First and only time I saw one I was taking a lunchtime stroll through the nature reserve, and there it was, sat overlooking a pong. Brilliant.

I've seen herons around the New River - and you don't see them where there are no fish.

I was near there today.

I've seen a kingfisher twice in my life, once on the river Avon outside Bath and once at Slimbridge WWT. It's a total thrill.

Kingfishers are ace. I'm lucky, we have a couple of them that live on or around the stream that runs at the back of our house. If you are outside at the right time you see them commute downstream in the morning and upstream in the evening. I've never managed to get a photo though.
