Listen in, listen Ian!
Dear MPs,

It's not actually "doing the right thing" if you only give the money back after you've been caught.

Tim.

Right. Decency because you have no alternative left is NOT DECENCY. It's cowardice.

Whilst I take your underlying point - that the MPs shouldn't have abused the system in the first place - it seems to me that it is controvertibly "the right thing" for them to pay the money back. For a start, as illustrated by publicansdecoy above, some are brazening it out, but moreover, if we say to MPs, or anyone, "You've done something wrong", and they try to make amends for it in some way, and we deride this as just as wrong, or as cowardice, or whatever, then what? Are we saying that once an offence has been committed, that's it, they're at fault for ever? I can't accept that. This whole ghastly business has done enough damage to Parliament already without adding some idea of culpability of MPs who have paid back any unreasonable expenses for all eternity (or until they leave office, at least).

To be honest, if I was getting away with it, I'd probably do it too. If I was then told to repay what I'd been given, I'd be a bit miffed. But these guys are paying some of it back, largely without complaint, and so we shouldn't really criticise them for it. But yeah, "doing the right thing" would have been setting up an independent expenses department with realistic boundaries in the first place.
