BA asks staff to work for nothing

While I don't dispute the need to save money, stuff like "BA's chief executive Willie Walsh has already agreed to work unpaid in July, forgoing his month's salary of £61,000." annoys me a bit. I suggest that if one's monthly wage is over £60,000, it's probably going to be easier to put a little by each month to make up the shortfall than if one's monthly wage is £1500 or so. I hate it when the wealthy go showboating like this - "Look at this not really a sacrifice I've made! You should make one too!"

oh, £61k a *month*. I'd been sitting here thinking "gosh, BA's CE isn't paid much!"

He could go without his monthly salary for three months and then many of his lowly staff wouldn't have to go without theirs for one and would still be able to pay their rent and feed their children. And he wouldn't even notice. That's my plan for him.

Don't be silly. He'll network, brainstorm, lead and strategise for the money too.

In California, the state is now furloughing staff to save money. Only some staff are being leaned on to work their furlough days, so the net effect is that it's a pay cut by any other name.

Isn't it clever of the capitalists to get us to work for nothing? How then, one wonders, is the economy going to recover when no one other than the wealthy has any dough? Or don't the rich really care?

Erm, it'll trickle down, of course.
