Quick, before it goes [Aug. 26th, 2009|01:07 am]
Listen in, listen Ian!
Whilst Housego comes across as polite and mild mannered in his media appearances he has maintained a peculiar and ongoing spat with fellow Mastermind winner Christopher Hughes. It all began when Hughes had triumphed in the 1983 edition of the show just 3 years after Housego had taken the crown. When Magnus Magnusson asked Hughes if he felt he was "the New Fred Housego" he irritably replied "Fred Housego drives Taxis I drive trains, to compare a taxi to a train is just insulting". Housego declined to respond to Hughes rather disdaining remarks but things did not end there. On Michael Parkinson's chat show later that year to promote an episode of QED that he was fronting Hughes said the one downside to winning Mastermind was that people kept comparing him to 'That Housego fella, I'm nothing like him. Sure we won the same show but to be honest I feel he's a fraud. Certainly in Britain I am known as the autodidacts autodidact". To this Housego did reply in a letter to the Times that he hoped in future Hughes "would keep his big mouth shut" and as both men faded from media view little more was heard of them. When Housego was given his own all night radio show on LBC things were to become more volatile. The show kept being disrupted by a caller who would yell "Toadfarts!" down the line then hang up. Housego claimed he knew it was Hughes and told him he would hunt him down and make him inhale the real literal farts of a toad which he had captured by bottling them up, Hughes retorted that he used the musk of the Cane Toad in mating season as deodorant so the threats didn't phase him. He also sent the RSPCA to investigate Housego's bottled toads allegation. In return House go countered by reporting Hughes to the RSPCA for bringing Australian pest the Cane Toad into the country. Neither charge stuck although Hughes did receive a police caution for prank calling the radio show as he "hadn't even been in a quiz where 1471 was the answer" according to Housego. The final ignominious chapter arrived in the form of the show Eggheads which signed Hughes as one of the titular contestants first up. When he heard Housego was also to be put onto "Possibly the strongest quiz team in Britain" Hughes torpedoed the idea claiming "If Housego is in then we definitely won't be one of the strongest quiz teams in Britain as I will be out. it's me or him". The Producers were happy to let Hughes go however Housego fell ill late on and Hughes earned a reprieve. This eleventh hour reshuffle also saw the weakest Egghead CJ De Mooi drafted in as a last minute replacement with one commissioner defending his inclusion as "it's more about show dynamics than talent. We know De Mooi isn't really up to it but the audience will hate him and seeing him getting basic questions wrong about similes and make a bigger prat of himself than he already is will be a ratings winner". Whilst the public thought they'd seen the last of Housego vs Hughes the same commissioner let slip that the 6th Egghead debacle had been sparked when Housego was invited to join the team thinking he and Hughes together would be "some kind of quiz Big Brother style car crash megamix". Unfortunately things spiraled out of hand before filming started with the men coming to blows on several occasions with Hughes chanting "Autodidact's Autodidact!" over and over. The show was never aired but it is said that Director General Mark Thompson said of it "we won't sink to those kind of levels again. Hughes is the biggest ego in the business we call show and a massive toad to boot. Unfortunately by including De Mooi to lose Hughes would really weaken the team to the point where the show would be an irrelevance so for now he stays. If only De Mooi would meet with an unfortunate accident then the show could move forward." The spin off search for the 6th Egghead Are You an Egghead? was the solution that was taken up and for now Hughes and Housego have maintained what Hughes referred to as an "Entre Cordiale".

marvellous, and still there at the moment, although it "may require copy-editing"...

in fact it looks like it's been there for a month, looking at the history page!
