So how come living on this residential street at least 100 yards from the nearest main road is actually noisier than when I lived on the A2?

Probably just relative levels. On a main road there'd be a constant loudness, but on a residential street any noise stands out more compared to the quiter moments?

They deliberately put louder petrol in the cars in London. It one of Ken Livingstone's many plans to convince everyone how evil cars are. Interestingly, oil from Venezuela is among the loudest in the world.
