Listen in, listen Ian!
Programmers! You know that thing where you spend ages staring at a program
because it appears at face value that it can't work and has never worked
but you're worried there's something really cunning and subtle that
someone's done to make it work? Well, guess what I've been doing for most
of this afternoon.

There isn't anything cunning and subtle.

Program ? I have half a system like that.

Maybe you should be looking for something obvious and downright stupid.

Today, I had the joy of actually finding the cause of a catastrophic intermittent bug (time span of reports ? 5 months. Number of known instances of said problem ? 8), proving that it was the cause of several dangerous episodes, being able to recreate the problem on demand, applying a fix, and proving that the fix cures the problem.

Even though I know I've fixed it, I'm still not conviced. And I am exhausted.
