Listen in, listen Ian!
This morning I managed to miss my stop on the tube. That's not really true,
I actually missed Holborn, so that when I looked up expecting the train to
be leaving Holborn it was actually leaving Covent Garden. Then I had a
'Seek Assistance' incident when I was trying to get out of the station.
It's been that kind of morning.

It all started when I woke up, and realised that I had to go to work. I'm
fed up of work. It's nothing wrong with this particular job, I'm just fed
up of the fact that I have to get out of bed at some ungodly hour every
morning, and go and be told what to do so that I can buy food. And have to
for another thirty years or so, before my inevitable lonely, penniless old
age. I think it's just a phase, and possibly to do with the winter drawing
in, and the fact that I'll see no daylight at all after about another two
weeks.

Anyway, in an attempt to break free from the routine I've subscribed to the
mailing list for IT vacancies at the British Antarctic Survey. I think it
might be more fun to go to work if there were penguins there.

As a reward for getting through the whiny part of the post, have a poll!

What are you reading at the moment?

And what are you using as a bookmark?

According to a 'news' story on the BBC website this morning, Ricky is coming back to Eastenders as well as Bianca. That's a bit rub isn't it?

Yes. Can they not think of anything for the existing characters to do?
39(81.2%)
No. Ricky and Bianca were great, and not teeth curlingly annoying in any way.
9(18.8%)

Do you ever look at the list of the most read 'news' stories on the BBC website, and despair slightly?

Yes. Are we really only interested in light hearted stories, and celebrity cr@p?
45(81.8%)
No. News about Eastenders is important, and who are you to judge what's important?
10(18.2%)

Do you read the most read stories anyway?

Yes. I am as shallow ans anybody else.
29(51.8%)
No. I am serious and highbrow.
27(48.2%)

Should the Mets try and sign A-Rod?

Yes, of course, he's the only good free agent out there and would give them an absolutely killer lineup.
3(5.3%)
No, he'd be too much of a disruption and there isn't really a place for him on the team.
7(12.3%)
I have no idea what you're on about.
47(82.5%)

If yes, then what should be the plan for what to do with him?

He could play 2B.
8(25.8%)
Move Wright to 2B, and he could play 3B.
0(0.0%)
Move Reyes to 2B, and he could play SS.
4(12.9%)
Somehow trade Delgado, and he could play 1B.
7(22.6%)
The outfield.
4(12.9%)
Another plan I've come up with, that I'll tell you about in the comments, then email Omar to tell him.
8(25.8%)

What's "a 'Seek Assistance' incident"?

I enjoyed answering the last question as nobody's ever likely to ask me for baseball tips ever again. Or is it basketball?

No, it's baseball. This userpic is Jose Reyes, whose position you want to change. Are you mad?

(Yes, I knew it was baseball really!)

I stand by my decision.

Yes, elaborate on the Seek Assistance incident!

I'm glad Bianca's coming back, but I'm disappointed they've said that she's going to come back down on her luck, depressed and penniless. I suppose I'm missing the whole point of Eastenders...

When coming out of the tube, the gate sometimes misreads your Oyster card, and flashes up "Seek Assistance" which means you a)Have to annoy the crowd of people behind you by pushing back through the crowd and b)Go and beg to be let out by the man on the manually controlled gate. It's annoying because it happens even when you have a perfectly valid ticket.

Huh? Whenever it goes "Seek Assistance" at me it lets me through anyway! I do not understand why it does but I am glad it does.

Are you on the pay-as-you-go type affair? It may be that you're being charged the maximum journey rate if you get a "seek assistance" and don't. Pure speculation on my part, of course, but that did happen to me when the gates were broken when I went in.

Here is a TIP: If it says SEEK ASSISTANCE and there is a little illuminated "94" by the side of it, it just means that the reader and card didn't connect properly - if you put the card on again but make sure that it connects properly with the reader (ie put it on totally flat, keep it there for a good second or so) it should let you through!

Possibly to save her the effort of actually acting.

Assuming you're talking about rounders, what has Andy Roddick the tennis player got to do with it? He's the only A-Rod I've heard of.

Rickaaaaaaaay!

I know very little about MLB, so I have no idea what the Mets would do with A-Rod. However I do know enough about baseball to know that free agents of his quality come available very infrequently, and that teams should be breaking the bank to sign him up.

I think you may have S.A.D, and your comments about waking up in the mornings are a manifestation of that.

teams should be breaking the bank to sign him up.

Oh, one of them will. It's just that the Mets already have great young players at shortstop and third base, which are they two positions A-Rod has played in his career. They'd have to get creative to sign him, but they should certainly try and work something out.

Err

Are you serious about the BAS? I used to know someone who did the IT there for 2 years, and the IT staff (at least back then) stayed year-round so it wouldn't exactly sort out your daylight problems come wintertime...

http://the.earth.li/~alex/halley/ (alex_at_halley) is worth a read if you're genuinely interested, Tim. Actually, it's worth a read whatever, cos Alex is a mighty fine chap and he knows how to take a photograph.

Re: Err

Depends what station you are at. If you are at the Autralian station then yes, I think the minimum time you can go for is 9 months and its impossible to elave during winter. During winter there are only about 10 people there, and teh chances of going mad are fairly hihg. Especially (as happened to my friend) if you find a spider in your greenhouse and have to burn all your fresh food so it doesn't escpae into the antarctic and become a super-spider (or, you know, DIE IN THE FREEZING COLD).

The american station is more like a small town and is much easier to get to. I think you can be there formuch shorter periods of time.

Penguins apparently really smell.

Re: Err

I'm serious about the BAS, but less so about my current state of mind being caused by the clocks going back. I was just being topical for no very good reason.

I suspect working for the British Antarctic Survey would turn out to involve a basement in Cambridge, rather than frozen wastes and penguins and going out for some time.

But they do have lots of frozen penguin waste in Cambridge (you can play pass the parcel while it thaws, though in this case the one left holding the package at the end is the slightly fishy loser)

It would be fun to see the Phillies sign A-Rod, to see how he'd get along with the Philadelphia fans.

But it'll probably be the Angels or Dodgers.

As a fan of a different NL East team, it would be anything but fun to see the Phillies sign him. Especially with that stadium, he'd hit a million home runs there.

But yes, after hitting his million home runs, the fans would run him out of town for making an error or something.
