Listen in, listen Ian!
Has anyone actually used LinkedIn for its intended career networking purpose, rather than as just another thing to collect friends on?

I haven't even used it for that. It's a menace - I go on every month or so to accept contacts because I don't want to feel I'm snubbing people.

Yeah, I think so. I've not been on there all that long but I think some of the links I'm making will be good for my career - it's helped me to keep in touch with people I was on the course with. I just got something from one of them this morning saying he had an intern looking for a placement, which is ace cos we actually are going to be looking for interns pretty soon. My funding runs out in a year so I'm trying to do lots of 'here I am, I am nice' sort of stuff now just in case I need to move on and work somewhere else.

I get cold calls all the time from people who've found my profile on there. Maybe one of these days, one of these cold calls might actually turn out to be a useful connection.

At today's workshop today loads of people were bigging it up, it's becoming a must. See www.linkedintelligence.com for the correct way to use it

I have added you. :)

I've had recruitment agents wanting to add me and calling me because of it, that kind of thing.

I've got a few friend-of-friend freelance gigs out of it, without trying very hard.

Not me. I have a few people on there but not a whiff of work yet. Maybe nobody needs what I got?

The main purpose of the internet is to collect friends. It's like a boring Pokemon.

I use it when I hire, I always put in the names of people I like the CV of and many times they turn out to be a 2nd or 3rd degree connection. I drop the mutual people a note and ask them what they really think of the person and if they'd hire them and use it to whittle down the pile. Not being on there doesn't do them any favours either because I just assume they're not all that techie then *&) I'm bloody ruthless when hiring though (hate reading CVs).
