Listen in, listen Ian!
I made my annual trip to Edmonton today for my eye test, and it appears that I need glasses. I could get away without them, but the optician recommended I get some, and I suppose I should.

I know nothing about glasses though. How do you know what type to buy? How much does a reasonable looking pair cost? I'll obviously lose them/break them all the time won't I?

While I'm in an advice asking mood, what's the team's opinion of cutting old jeans down to make shorts? Is this still acceptable for grownups in the high fashion world of 2010?

Glasses are great! Though you could always get contacts if you don't like them. I have always gone to Specsavers and got the two-for-one deal where I've got two pairs for about £80. So I have a spare pair if I break them or lose them. However, despite being very clumsy and forgetful, this almost never happens - my glasses are either on my face or beside my bed. I did break one pair by dancing too enthusiastically at Poptimism once, mind.

As for what type to buy, you just try them all on and decide which ones look best. The optician or someone in the shop should be able to point out a few which go well with the shape of your face. I was pretty sure last time that I wanted ones with chunky, colourful frames, but then I tried some on and I looked like Su Pollard.
