I'm actually quite tempted to cross-post non-secret/non-harmful comments on unlocked posts that would be utterly meaningless out of context to Twitter though. Does the destination of the cross-post have any kind of link back to the source?

Yes it contains the comment subject or the first line of the comment body and link back to the post, anchored to the comment in question . See my test: http://twitter.com/very_true_thing/status/22819322333

I get the feeling I've missed something here. Everyone is alluding to somthing but seems to be assuming everyone knows what they are talking about. Well I don't! What's going on??

Folk can post their comments on your journal to their facebook or twitter. Regardless of the security settings on your journal.
